FAQ Schema: What It Is, How to Add It and What to Expect
FAQ schema is structured data that labels the questions and answers on a page so search engines can understand them. It is simple to add, but it helps to know what it does and does not do today.
What FAQ schema is
It uses the schema.org FAQPage type, usually written as JSON-LD in a script tag. Each question is a Question with an acceptedAnswer.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Are the tools free?",
"acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes, every tool is free." }
}]
}
What to expect from Google
Google reduced FAQ rich results in 2023 and now shows them only for well-known government and health websites. For most sites the markup will not produce expanded results. It remains valid and harmless, and it keeps your question-and-answer content clearly structured.
How to add it in 4 steps
- Write real questions people ask, with clear answers visible on the page.
- Generate the code with the FAQ Schema Generator.
- Paste the script into the page's head or body.
- Test it with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.
Rules to follow
- Mark up only content that is visible to users.
- Do not use FAQ markup for advertising.
- Keep answers concise and accurate.
Also make sure your titles and descriptions are strong: see the title tag and meta description guide.
Frequently asked questions
Will FAQ schema give me rich results?
Probably not. Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites, so most sites will not see them.
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
It is valid, low-effort markup that describes your content clearly to machines. Treat it as a small bonus, not a ranking tactic.
Must the questions be visible on the page?
Yes. Only mark up questions and answers that users can actually see on the page.
